To attract my target audience I decided to look at the language they used, compared to how a middle aged upper class person would speak. When producing the written parts for my magazine i wanted to make sure that they could understand it so i wrote it in a 'slang' language that 14 year old could understand. I have used words like 'rockin' and 'wicked' typical words that working class teenagers would use.
When interviewing the band for my double page spread I kept the language the same and didn't edit the slang words but because my target audience is aimed at 14 year olds i had to take out some of the swearwords. If i kept the interview as original as i could it would make the audience feel that the artists have had alot of involvement in producing the magazine. I also chose to set out my double page spread in columns so that it was clear and easy to read, I also put the questions in one colour and the artists answer in another to ensure that my audience could read the interview. I added a drop cap to show clearly where to interview stars and also some pull quotes so attract the attention of my audience and make them want to read more.
When producing my front cover i wanted the magazine name to be clearly recognized so i made sure it was the biggest word on the page. I also used striking, bold colours to attract attention as it would be no good if my magazine was brown and this is not an eye catching colour and know one would see it on the shelf and buy. I also didn't want the colour scheme to be too bright as this is a winter issue and i didn't want it to look too summery. I chose to use the colour red as it is associated with alert signs and is also the best attraction colour. For my image, i used a plain background behind the model as i wanted the pose and the expression of the model to speak for itself. Also fussy backgrounds can be too much in your face and draw your eye away from the rest of the magazine. I have also dressed my model in popular clothes that my target audience would wear, but again nothing too fussy and it would draw your attention away from the models face. Alot of girls who read rock music magazine wear bright makeup so i made sure my model looked the part but also matched the makeup colour with the text colour. The second most important word on the front cover is the name of the band that feature in this weeks issue.
To make people want to read further into the magazine i took every feature and news article title and listed them in the contents page. I also put down every artist/band that is mentioned in the magazine. This will make the reader want to read further into the magazine to find out more.
